What is a CAPS?

Ask the Expert: What is a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist Remodeler?
The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), in collaboration with AARP and other experts, developed the Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) designation. This certification is achieved through training and testing during a multi-course educational program.

Creating User-friendly and Accessible Spaces
John Sylvestre, a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist, understands the unique needs of the older adult population. He is knowledgeable about home modifications, design-build remodeling, and solutions to common barriers. John earned his CAPS credential in the 20th-century and has been helping his clients age in place for decades.
A Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) designs spaces with the needs of older folks in mind. Many people develop arthritis or lose strength in their hands as they age. This tiled shower seat has an accessible handle. Levers do not require as much dexterity or hand strength to use.

Aging-In-Place Bathroom Design for St. Paul Condo
We transformed this owner’s bathroom with a universal design, creating a beautiful space filled with light that is also accessible for all. The 2×2 inch tiles on the floor of the curbless shower provide more grip and help prevent slips. Additionally, they meet both comfort and code standards for universal design.
